The portable Garmin GPSMAP 478 is a high resolution display GPS unit, that can be used on board a boat and for land navigation. Detailed US maps are installed. Attractive advanced options like NEXRAD radar, and satellite radio can be added. The product number for this unit is 010-00543-00.

GPS
This is a 12 channel parallel receiver and differential ready. It is an accuracy of 49 feet or 50 m in normal GPS mode. Using differential GPS and much better accuracy is achieved where USCG differential GPS as an accuracy of 10 to 16 feet or 3 to 5 m, and WAAS differential GPS has an accuracy off 10 feet or 3 m.

Antenna
The antenna is detachable and folds inwards for storage.

Display
The 478 display size is 3 wide inches by 2.2 inches high (7.6 x 5.6 cm). When measured diagonally the screen size is 3.75 inches (9.5 cm). This high resolution backlit display is 480 x 320 pixels and has 256 colors.

Memory
Mapping memory is not available and maps must be read through Garmin data cards.

Built In Maps
Included maps of the US Marine, and entire US coast including Alaska and Hawaii are based on BlueChart G2 technology. City navigator maps are built in which include over 6 million points of interest like hotels and restaurants. The 478 will give directions using voice prompts with an external speaker attached.

Waypoints and Routes
Up to 3000 waypoints and 50 routes can be saved.

Installation
It accepts 11 to 35 V DC. Because it's a portable unit also runs on a rechargeable lithium ion battery. The battery life is four to 15 hours depending on whether the backlight is in use are not. The overall size is 5.7 inches wide by 3.2 inches high by 1.9 inches deep (14.5 x 8.1 x 4.8 cm). It weighs 14 ounces. The case is waterproof to IPX7.
